Your Urine and Your Health

The human urine has its normal colour and other colour ranges may reflect an abnormality on your health. The colour of urine is affected by many factors such as infections, diseases, medication, food, and many others can alter urine colour temporarily.

Urine is a liquid by-product of metabolism in humans and other mammals. It flows from the kidney through the ureters to the urinary bladder.

Urination is the excretion of urine from the body through the urethra. By-products generated through metabolism such as urea, uric acid are expelled from the body during urination. Urination is the body's primary method of excreting water-soluble chemicals from the body.

The average urine production in an adult is around 1.4 litres per day with a normal range of 0.6 to 2.6 litres. This should be produced in 6 to 8 urinations per day depending on the activity level, body's state of hydration, environmental factors, health state of the person and weight. Excessive or lower production of urine may need a medical attention.

The colour of urine varies and comes with a vital message depending upon the contributing factors. The normal urine colour is stray-yellow - transparent solution ranging from colourless to amber pale yellow. This colour originates from the presence of urobilin which is the final waste product from breakdown of hemoglobin.
