UNILAG Students Celebrate As ASUU Embarks On A Two-Week Strike (With Pictures)

By now, it's no news that the Academic Staff Union of Universities have announced and commenced a two-week strike action, taking place from Monday 9, 2020. This strike action which was announced after a meeting with the NEC, was announced by the President of the Union and it has since been picked up by multiple news publications. 

What might be news anyway is the extent to which students of Universities in Nigeria are happy about this strike. I mean, two weeks without any academic activity is definitely a banger. But of all the students, students of the University of Lagos seem to be the happiest. 

Recall that, last week, the Pro-Challencor of the prestigious University, in coalition with the Minister and the higher power, cancelled the 52nd Annual Convocation Ceremony that was supposed to hold. That course of action hindered a lecture free week for the students an there was quite and uproar in the school and on social media. 

But now that ASUU have decided to reimburse the one week with two weeks, haha, the joy of the students can't be contained, as lecturers have already stopped coming to class immediately the news broke.

You Can Only Suspend Me from the Throne but Not from the Truth; Lamido Reacts to Dethronement

The dethroned Emir of Kano, has reacted to his dethronement by the Kano state government following their press release in which they announced the Emir dethroned on grounds of disrespecting the Governor and government agencies.

In his speech, the former CBN governor says the throne of an Emir is not permanent and his time has come and gone. He further stated that he would have never become Emir of Kano if the throne has been one that is for a lifetime. He said someone was there before him, and whether now or later, someone else will take over.

He however sent a strong note to the Government that he has been only suspended from the throne but cannot be suspended from the truth. He gave his full commitment to continue saying the truth about the ills and shortcomings of governance in the North.

He urged his followers to accept the will of God as he himself has accepted. Recall his daughter already lashed out that people stop sending them condolences message as he only lost a throne and not his life.

Nigerians have reacted to the sudden removal of Lamido Sanusi from the position of Emir of Kano. Many have related the entire scenario to nemesis, many condemned the removal, many said it's what Lamido did during his tenure as a CBN governor against the former president Good luck Jonathan that is hunting him presently.

In all indications report made it clear that the governor of Kano state Ganduje purposely removed Lamido, simply because he supported his opposition party PDP.

Be that as it may, the removal is so sudden and it's a choice of any man to choose who he wants to support whenever election is imminent, thus such reason is so flimsy for the removal of a whole king.

That is the motive behind the agitations that as taken over social media when many Nigerians as taken their Twitter handle to argue that such a sudden removal cannot happen in their land.

There was even a lady that argued that it is easier to dethrone the queen of England than to dethrone Oba of Benin.

She meant that there are some king that their Dethronement process would take time, not like what happened to Lamido Sanusi suddenly.

For instance no one dare disrespect some king in the Yoruba land such as Alaafin of Oyo, Alake of Egbaland, Awujale of Ijebu land and Oba of Benin Kingdom.

There was a certain story of how a certain man disrespect Alaafin of Oyo, the man barked like a dog till his death, that is one story of those who disrespect the king in the Yoruba land.

Conclusively, I think this should be a lesson to other kings, what happened to Lamido Sanusi can happen in another part of the Northern area just because the Emir supported an opposition party that's why he was dethroned, so it's not advisable for a king to support a party and neglect the others, a king must not neglect any religion or support any Religion and neglect others, because a king must be the father to everyone in the city and anywhere

BREAKING: Aminu Ado Bayero announced as new Emir of Kano

Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano state has approved the appointment of Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as the 15th Emir of Kano in the ruling Fulani dynasty.

This came barely three hours after the dethronement of Emir Muhammad Sanusi II.

Until his new appointment, Aminu Ado Bayero was the Emir of Bichi.

The Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, announced the appointment of the new emir while addressing a news conference at the Government House, Kano on Monday.

“I have been directed by his Excellency, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje following the resolution of the state Executive Council and recommendation by Kano Kingmakers to announce the appointment of Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as the new Emir of Kano.

“In my capacity as the Secretary to the state government, I have been directed by sections 11 subsection 1 of Kano state Emirate Council law 2019 to announce the appointment of Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, the former emir of Bichi as the 15th Emir of Kano in the ruling Fulani dynasty.

He said the appointment of the new Emir followed the recommendation received by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje from the Kingmakers,” Usman added.

ASUU declares 2-week warning strike

The National leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a two-week warning strike in all public universities with effect from Monday, March 9.

President of ASUU, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, disclosed this in Enugu, Monday, after the Union’s two-day National Executive Council meeting.

He explained that Nigerian universities were under ceaseless siege, a situation that needed to be addressed.

Ogunyemi explained that the essence of the industrial action was to force the Federal Government to take action on the pending issues.

He regretted that their members in federal institutions were yet to be paid their February salaries because of the issue of Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information Service (IPPIS), adding that they needed to let the Federal Government know that enough was enough.

“In our previous meetings, the Minister of Finance was solely concerned about IPPIS to the point that other issues were not addressed,” he stated.

The ASUU President, however, said that the Union would reconvene if nothing was done at the expiration of the two-week strike to determine the next line of action.

BREAKING: Ganduje dethrones Emir Sanusi

Malam Muhammadu Sanusi ll has been dethroned over disrespect to the office of the governor and other government agencies. The Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, said the removal was with immediate effect. The emir’s action violated the part 3 section A-E of Kano state law, hence the removal. He said the removal was in line with consultation with relevant stakeholders. He said a new emir would be announced in due course. He urged Kano people to remain calm and go about their normal businesses. Earlier in the day, there was pandemonium at the Kano State House of Assembly on Monday over the lingering crisis between the state government and the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi ll. Trouble started few minutes when the Chairman, House Standing Committee on Public Complaints and Petitions, Alhaji Hamza Ibrahim Ci-Dari, raised an observation regarding the the two petitions against the emir. The House received two petitions against the Emir last week. Immediately the chairman raised the issue, he was shut down by some members of the House, particularly members of the opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who insisted that it is against the rule of the House to raise an observation during plenary on a petition that is before a committee, which has not submitted its report. Members of the APC and PDP engaged in a free-for-all fight with the aim of taking over the control of the Mace, the symbol of authority of the parliament. It took the intervention of the Sergeant at Arms and security operatives to rescue the mace from the lawmakers. The Speaker of the House, Alhaji Abdulaziz Garba Gafasa announced the postponement of the session for 30 minutes. Daily Trust observed presence of heavily armed security operatives at the assembly complex, government house and Emir’s palace. The governor of the state has been at loggerhead with Emir Sanusi and many see the fresh probe as a continuation of the initial crisis that led to the creation of additional four new emirates in the state. This is not the first time the emir and the Kano Emirate are coming under probe since Malam Muhammadu Sanusi ll, ascended the throne in 2014. The Kano anti-graft agency investigated the emir over what it called “questionable” expenditure to the tune of N 4 billion but the probe was later suspended. It could be recalled that a Federal High Court sitting in Kano had last month quashed the report of the commission that indicted the Emir over an allegation of N3.4 billion fraud from the Emirate Council fund. Last Friday, another Federal High Court in Kano restrained Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission from investigating the emir over alleged land racketeering to the tune of N2. 2bn. The presiding judge, Justice Lewis Allagoa ordered the commission and its Chairman, Barrister Rimingado to maintain the status quo in the interim pending the determination of the case filed before it by the emir. The order, dated March 6, 202 and signed by Justice Allagoa, a copy of which was obtained by Daily Trust reads in parts: “The status quo be maintained in the interim pending the hearing and determination of the originating motion”. Justice Allagoa then adjourned the case till March 18, 2020 for hearing. The emir in his prayers, requested for an interim injunction restraining the 1st and 2nd respondents (Commission and its Chairman) from investigating the affairs of the applicant pending the hearing of the originating motion. An order of interim injunction for the maintenance of the status quo pending the hearing and determination of the originating motion. Contacted, Barrister Rimingado said the commission would honour the court by appearing before it on March 18, 2020. “The commission will ask the court of law to compel the emir to appear before it. Because as far as the commission is concerned, the court did not stop it from continuing with its investigation. The status quo is subject to interpretation,” he said

A picture has just gone viral on social media. In the picture, a text is seen in which the content of the text reads that a guy slept with a particular lady then went ahead to tell his homeboys about it prompting them to go sleep with her also.

They were of the inclination that she was a cheap girl and felt she wasn't aware of the fact that they were friends.

However, unknown to the guys, the lady is HIV positive which was why she agreed to sleep with all the guys as a way of teaching them a lifelong lesson.

So, she texts the first guy who originally broadcasted the information to his friends to tell his guys and himself to all go get checked for HIV.

It is huge rampant for situations like this were men bless themselves with various kinds of STDs all in the name of sleeping with a lady and then telling their homebodies about it so they can sleep with her to.

However, the question remains whether she knew the guy would tell his friends in the first place before she went ahead and gave him HIV

Nigeria becomes the first country to be commended by WHO for the fight against coronavirus

While big countries like CHINA, US, UK, ITALY and others are battling to control the spread of coronavirus, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has commended the Nigerian government on measures taken to contain the spread of coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, in the country.

Mr Adhanom who stressed that containment starts with every individual; further revealed that the greatest enemy right now is not the virus itself, but fear, rumours, and stigma. Adding that “our greatest assets are facts, reason, and solidarity”. 

This is coming weeks after some scientist (epidemiologist) predicted that coronavirus "will ultimately not be containable" and, within a year, will infect somewhere between 40 and 70 percent of humanity, but many of those people, won't have severe illnesses or even show symptoms at all, which is already the case for many people who have tested positive for the virus; Countries around the world are now scrambling to contain the rapidly spreading new coronavirus, as the number of new infections outside China exceeded those recorded inside the country since the start of the viral outbreak.

The Director-General of the United Nations health agency, Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, recognised the government’s effort in a tweet on Saturday.

He also thanked the Nigeria Centre For Disease Control (NCDC) for its efforts since the index case of the virus was reported late February.

Ghebreyesus noted that Nigeria was swift and transparent in the manner it shared the sequence of coronavirus from the country’s first case.

“This a true act of solidarity and an important step in stopping the coronavirus from spreading further,” he said.

The remarks by the health agency’s director-general was in reaction to an earlier tweet by the NCDC that Nigeria has published the first African SARS-CoV-2 genome sequence, from coronavirus.

His tweet did not go unnoticed as the Director-General of NCDC, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, thanked the Ethiopian for recognising the efforts of the Federal Government and others fighting the virus in the country.

Ihekweazu, however, noted that the nation still has “a long journey ahead” in ensuring that the people of the country were protected from the virus and similar diseases.

Paterson, US Grants Mosques Approval To Broadcast Adhan Over Loudspeakers - Islam for Muslims

The US city of Paterson, New Jersey, has backed an ordinance to allow the adhan, the Muslim call to prayer, to be broadcast over loudspeakers. Under the new measure, which still has to go through two public hearings before being implemented, the adhan would be exempt from the city’s noise control ordinance and allowed to be broadcast outside every day between 6am and 10pm. 

The resolution was approved by council members on Tuesday by a vote of 7-0, with two members abstaining. “We applaud Paterson officials for taking this admirable step toward inclusion, and encourage them to pass the proposed ordinance,” said Salaedin Maksut, executive director of the New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

“Their open-mindedness to such laws is a concrete demonstration of respect and mutual understanding between the residents of our rich and diverse communities.” Paterson has approximately 30,000 Muslim residents, along with more than 15 mosques scattered across the area.

Egypt is executing Islamic Militants, Buhari is sending Boko Haram abroad to study Nigerians react

Hundreds of Nigerians have continue to troll President Muhammad Buhari and his APC led administration over the plans to release and train repentant Boko-Haram. As the National Assembly are proposing a bill to grant amnesty to repentant Boko Haram members.

Nigerians have called on President Muhammed Buhari to emulate the government of Niger and Egypt as they execute Islamic militants and terrorist instead of giving them amnesty. 

Niger executed ten Boko Haram terrorist last month and yesterday Wednesday Egypt executed an ex-special forces officer turned top Islamist militant, Hisham Ashmawy, over-involvement in high-profile attacks, said the army.

The execution by hanging was carried out based on a decision by the military court … and after taking all the relevant judicial procedures.

Charges on deposits, withdrawals above N500,000 take effect April 1

The nationwide implementation of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s cashless policy on deposits and withdrawals above of N500,000 will take effect nationwide from April 1.

This was made known in an electronic mail message sent by the Guarantee Trust Bank to its customers on Thursday.

According to the message, there will be three per cent processing fees for withdrawals and two per cent processing fees for lodgments of amounts above N500, 000 for individual accounts.

For corporate accounts, the bank said it would charge five per cent processing fees for withdrawals and three per cent processing fee for lodgments of amounts above N3, 000, 000.

It read in part, “The Central Bank of Nigeria has announced that charges on cash deposits over N500,000 will be implemented nationwide effective from Wednesday, April 1st, 2020.

“This comes as an addition to already existing charges on withdrawals.

“This means that whenever you deposit or withdraw cash over N500,000 at any of our branches located in Nigeria, you will be charged a processing fee.”

Coronavirus: Italian Patient Recovering Well, Now Eats Amala - Lagos Government

The Centre Manager of the Lagos State Biobank, Dr Bankole Akinwale, has disclosed that the Italian, and only person who tested positive for coronavirus in Nigeria is fast recovering and eating a local meal, “Amala”.

Mr Akinwale made the disclosure Tuesday, during a briefing and sensitization of religious leaders on Coronavirus and other communicable diseases, organized by the State Ministry of Home Affairs, at Christ the Light Chapel, Alausa, Ikeja.

“With no other confirmed case, the index case is doing well. Our patient is doing well as the viral dose is dropping, and his appetite increasing, from our follow up samples,” he said.

Mr Akinwale also stated that they had decontaminate the hotel where the Italian lodged and are still tracing the contacts and following upon them.

According to him, the essence was to break and stop the spread of the disease.

He also highlighted that the state government has renovated the wards beyond the structures and created about 10, each isolation wards to take care of over 100 patients, in case there was overflow.

“We have also prepared each of the general hospital to have reserved area in case of overflow, we have mobile clinics that can take up to 30 persons,” he said.

While assuring that the two fresh suspected cases of Coronavirus patients recorded between Monday and Tuesday at the Disease Control Centre, Yaba, had been put under control, Mr Akinwale said a Chinese who was taken in earlier Tuesday has been released after testing negative to the disease.

Mr Akinwale further assured that there was no cause for the alarm over the fresh cases, saying there were enough facilities to handle the situation.

Mr Akinwale also expressed concern over anxieties among residents on every manifesting symptom as suspected Coronavirus case.

According to him, “A lot of things are flying in the social media, but the Lagos State Government has been so active and had prior to the latest development, established the incident command system cost over $ 4 million, in collaboration with Canadian government.”

The president of the Theater Arts and Motion Picture Producers Association of Nigeria, Mr Bolaji Amusan, aka Mr Latin, confirmed Kasumu’s death to The PUNCH.
