Russia Approves COVID-19 Vaccine. Putin's Daughter Vaccinated

Putin says Russia’s Health Ministry has approved world’s FIRST Covid-19 vaccine – his own daughter has been vaccinated

Vladimir Putin announced on Tuesday morning that Russia has registered the world's first vaccine against coronavirus. He says the vaccine is effective in forming immunity against the deadly pathogen which has spread globally.

“As far as I know, a vaccine against the coronavirus infection has been registered this morning (in Russia) for the first time in the world,” the President told members of the government. “I thank everyone who worked on the vaccine - it’s a very important moment for the whole world.

Putin insisted that vaccination in Russia should only be carried out on a voluntary basis, with nobody forced to accept immunization. He also revealed that one of his daughters has already been vaccinated.

With over 700,000 deaths attributed to the pandemic and over 20 million official cases internationally, the entire planet is crying out for a solution to the Covid-19 crisis. It is hoped the Russian vaccine will go into general circulation by January. In the meantime, front-line health workers and the medically vulnerable will be given priority, according to the Health Ministry.

Putin asked Health Minister Mikhail Murashko to provide more detailed information about the plans for immunization. "I know that it works rather effectively, forms a stable immunity, and, I repeat, it passed all the necessary inspections," the President added.

Last week, the Health Minister himself stated that initial clinical trials of the vaccine developed by the Gamelei Research Center in Moscow had been completed.

Putin said that his daughter had a slight temperature after taking part in trials, but that it quickly went away. "One of my daughters got the vaccine. In this sense, she took part in the experiment. After the first vaccination, she had a temperature of 38, the next day - 37 and that was all."

Sanwo-Olu To Meet The Boy In The “Mummy Calm Down “ Video

The Governor shared the news on his official Instagram and Twitter accounts few minutes ago and he also urged lagosians to calm down in this festive period.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu wrote:

I saw a video of a charming young boy online asking his mom to ‘calm down’ as she was set to punish him for a misdemeanour. I was moved by his sobriety, which reflected in his promise of “last chance”, when confronted with the fact that he is a regular offender.

I urge every Lagosian to ‘calm down’ and not get carried away. Like the rest of the world, we are still in the middle of a pandemic and need to remain extremely careful to keep the gains of the sacrifices we have all made in the past months.

Let’s calm down!

As an aside, I would like to meet the young boy since we both now have exclusive rights to the phrasal verb ‘calm down’.

COVID-19 Vaccine Is Tested And Safe, Says Russian Military

The Russian defence ministry said on Wednesday it had developed a “safe” coronavirus vaccine following clinical trials on a group of volunteers.

The ministry said 18 people had participated in the research and were discharged without “serious adverse events, health complaints, complications or side effects”.

The results of the trials “allow us to speak with confidence about the safety and good tolerability of the vaccine”, it said in a statement.

The defence ministry did not say whether the vaccine was in fact effective but a doctor working on the trials said the volunteers were now protected against the coronavirus.

“Their immunity is working well, antibodies are being created, they are protected against the coronavirus,” researcher Svetlana Volchikhina said in a video released by the defence ministry.

Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu told President Vladimir Putin during the height of the epidemic in Russia in late May that military researchers were developing a vaccine with scientists at the Gamaleya Institute in Moscow.

The volunteers were isolated in the Burdenko military hospital in Moscow on June 18 when the trial vaccine was administered and underwent daily check-ups.

The defence ministry reported that “for 28 days after vaccination, the vital signs of the volunteers remained within normal limits”.

“We now know that we are 100 percent protected,” Yury, a member of the army who participated in the tests, said on leaving the hospital.

A second group of participants who were vaccinated on June 23 are currently in isolation in hospital under medical supervision.

The defence ministry has said it expects clinical trials to be fully completed by the end of July.

Russia has recorded the fourth highest number of coronavirus infections in the world with 746,369 cases and nearly 12,000 deaths, health officials said on Wednesday.

GUIDELINES FOR REOPENING OF SCHOOLS – FG

The Federal Government has rolled out conditions schools and learning institutions must meet before they reopen.
The conditions are contained in a 36-page document submitted to the Senate by the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu for their Information.
The document obtained by The Nation is titled: “Guidelines for schools and learning facilities reopening after COVID-19 pandemic closure.”
The Minister, in his forward to the document, described the conditions as key strategies for implementing safe, efficient, and equitable plans for school reopening and operations.
He noted that “given that COVID-19 may be with us for a while, the guidelines also highlight the urgent need to maintain and improve upon distance learning programmes.”
He added the guidelines were drafted in close coordination with health, environmental, education, and school safety experts tasked with the responsibility of charting a pathway for safely reopening schools and learning facilities for quality teaching and learning.
A major plank of the conditions is that schools must “create immediate temporary” COVID-19 “isolation space” before they can be considered to reopen.
Schools are also mandated to “ensure establishment of a School COVID-19 Referral System, including protocols and procedures to take if learners, teachers, administrators and other education personnel become unwell while in schools.”
Read Also: Plan to reopen schools by Oyo insensitive, says Fed Govt
Schools are also to establish and adequately equip dispensaries and clinics as appropriate as well as maintain regular contact and collaborate with health authorities on school safety, health, and hygiene.
Other conditions include that the Federal Government and other school owners would: “Develop appropriate mental health and psychosocial support services that address stigmatization and discrimination to assist learners, teachers, administrators, and other education personnel and their families to cope with the effects of COVID-19 and continued uncertainties of the pandemic.
“Make adequate provisions for school feeding where applicable to encourage learners to return and sustain attendance.
“Allocate grants to schools and learning facilities to procure soaps and buckets, ensure regular safe water supply, ensure constant supply of learning and instructional materials and pay salaries on time.”
They are also to mobilise and deploy new and existing resources to: maintain facilities and constantly upgrade teaching and learning equipment and upgrade infrastructure to cope with similar outbreaks that could cause disruption of the education system.
On the sequencing and scheduling of safe reopening, the Minister noted in the document that “safe school reopening will require careful sequencing and scheduling.
“This is necessary as all requirements for safe opening cannot be promptly met for or by all schools at the same time. There is therefore an imperative for prioritization. The following considerations underline the necessity of sequencing the safe reopening of schools:
“Time will be required to carry out need assessments and to organize procurement and delivery to schools.”
On the decisions about reopening schools and learning facilities, the Minister added: “Federal and States Ministries if Education should decide when to reopen after due consultations with the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Federal Ministry of Health, National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), and other critical stakeholders, including non-state education providers, teachers’ unions, PTAs, and school based management committees (SBMCs).
“It is equally crucial that consultations are held and communication exchanged with parents, teachers, learners and communities to understand and address common concerns.
“Decisions on safe reopening should be contingent on meeting the requirements set out in these guidelines and on a case by case basis for each school and learning facility.
“To this end, a multi-sectoral approach comprising of education, health, environment and Emergency Operation Centre (EOCs) should use the Safe Reopening School Readiness and Compliance checklist to determine when each school should reopen.”

Guidelines For Reopening Of Schools By Minister Of State For Education

Segun James and Martins Ifijeh

The federal government has rolled out guidelines for the reopening of educational institutions.

All primary, secondary and tertiary educational institutions in the country were shut in March when the federal government unveiled measures to battle the spread of COVID-19.

This is coming as there seems to be a major breakthrough in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic as dexamethasone, a cheap and widely available low-dose United Kingdom steroid drug, has shown efficacy for preventing critically-ill COVID-19 patients from dying.

However, barely three days to the planned reopening of worship centres, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has suspended the plans, citing the rising cases of COVID-19 in the state.

The Minister of State for Education, Mr. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, rolled out the guidelines for the reopening of schools in Abuja yesterday.

He spoke at the 2020 Policy Meeting on Admissions to Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Nwajiuba said: “All institutions must have hand-washing facilities; body temperature checks; body disinfectants at all entering points to their major facilities, including the gates, hostels, classes, offices, etc; the whole premises of each institution must be decontaminated; all efforts must be geared toward maintenance of the highest level of hygiene and institutions must ensure social and physical distancing in class sizes and meeting spaces.”

The minister hailed the higher institutions for responding promptly to the pandemic challenges by coming up with different innovations, including the manufacturing of some of the facilities that were required to attend to COVID-19 patients.

He warned them against reopening schools without the federal government’s approval.

“While we look forward to easing the lockdown, which will ultimately lead to re-opening of our campuses, I urge all the heads of institutions not to wait till the announcement on reopening before putting in place all necessary measures in compliance with the protocols and advisories of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control,” he stated.

COVID-19: Oyo Reopens Schools, Worship Centers As Workers Are To Fully Resume

The Government of Oyo State led by Seyi Makinde on Monday announced the resumption of religious activities in the state.

This decision was made known by the Chief Press Secretary to Makinde, Taiwo Adisa.

Adisa said that the Oyo State COVID-19 Task Force reached the decision after holding a meeting that lasted for two and a half hours.

However, churches and mosques are expected to operate at 25% of their normal capacity. This sounds ambiguous because there is no how government can determine this.

Also, schools are to partially resume on June 29 as Primary 6, JSS 3 and SSS 3 students are expected to return to the class to prepare for their exit examinations.

All students and their teachers are expected to wear nosemask.

The Government also enjoined schools to provide hand washing buckets for their pupils.

The statement urged schools to liaise with Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) to achieve this.

The Government is considering full reopening of schools on July 15.

In addition, all Secretariat workers are to resume work next week after being at home for almost three months.

The state government has also reviewed curfew to 10pm to 4am.

He said the government is still reviewing possible resumption date for tertiary institution students.
